The present book provides a detailed description of the bryophyte flora and vegetation of the Dachstein mountains in the Northern Limestone Alps of Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg as the result of investigations in the period 2006-2015. The size of the area is approx. 1000 km², the difference in altitude is 2480 m. With the mountain Hoher Dachstein, the highest montain of Upper Austria and Styria and the second highest of the Northern Alps the area reaches an altidude of 2995 m.

The general part of the book with introductory chapters is followed by parts about the higher vegetation and the characteristic bryophytes of the various habitats and altitude levels.

All 620 species of bryophytes are listed, which were found in the area. This commented list contains finding data as well as remarks about abundance, ecology, sociology, possible endangering of each taxon in the area and distribution maps. Historical records are cited too. Two species are new for science: Bryum gjaidsteinense and Orthotrichum simonyi. Additionally, 11 taxa are new for Upper Austria. Furthermore, nearly all taxa found in the area are illustrated with 3356 line drawings on 119 plates. After the section with 178 color photos follows the bryosociological part with the description of the new syntaxa Tetraplodontetum urceolati, Molendoetum tenuinervis and some new sub-associations.
